This package is ideal for:
Screening frequency depends on your initial results and risk factors. For those with normal bone density and no major risk factors, screening every 2-5 years may be sufficient. Individuals with osteopenia need screening every 1-2 years. Those with osteoporosis or on treatment require more frequent monitoring, usually annually. Your healthcare provider will recommend an appropriate screening schedule based on your individual circumstances.
The DEXA scan is painless and non-invasive. You lie on a padded table while the scanner passes over your body without touching you. The procedure requires no injections, sedation, or special preparation. Most people find it comfortable, though you need to remain still for about 10-15 minutes. The scanner is open, so there’s no risk of claustrophobia.
While designed to assess bone density, comprehensive screening packages identify related health issues. Blood tests may reveal vitamin D deficiency, thyroid disorders, or kidney problems affecting bone health. The DEXA scan occasionally detects previously unknown vertebral fractures. Abdominal aortic calcifications visible on spine images may indicate cardiovascular risk. These incidental findings can lead to early treatment of other conditions.
The DEXA scan requires no dietary restrictions – you can eat normally beforehand. If your package includes blood tests, you may need to fast for 8-12 hours before the appointment. You’ll receive specific instructions when booking. Water is allowed during fasting periods. If you take morning medications, consult about whether to take them before screening.
DEXA scanning is accurate and reproducible, with precision errors less than 1-2%. It’s the standard for bone density measurement. Factors like patient positioning, recent contrast studies, or metal implants can affect accuracy. Quality control measures and experienced technologists ensure reliable results. When performed properly, DEXA provides consistent measurements suitable for monitoring changes over time.
Most medications don’t need to be stopped before osteoporosis screening. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you take. Calcium supplements should be avoided for 24 hours before the DEXA scan as they can affect results. Recent contrast agents from other imaging studies may interfere with accuracy. Your provider will advise if any temporary medication adjustments are needed.
